Pleasure…
It’s an evocative word.
The author Don Shewey, who provided erotic massage in New York during the AIDS crisis, was identified by his friend as a ‘pleasure activist’. This is such a great term to describe someone who advocates for, promotes, and actively works to increase pleasure as a valid, worthy, and necessary pursuit in life. Being a pleasure activist is something we should all aspire to…
Engaging with pleasure is a lifelong quest. I have found and experienced it in some pretty funky and some utterly exquisite places in the past, and with maturity the ability to recognise, follow, and integrate with pleasure broadens and deepens. This comes with an increasing desire for, and acceptance of, being in pleasure, which Esther Perel explains in this way: ‘A healthy sense of erotic entitlement is built on a relaxed, generous and unencumbered attitude towards the pleasures of the body’.
This entitlement reflects the worthiness of pleasure for pleasure’s sake - for our own sake. That’s a very worthwhile destination.
