The Craft of Domination

Anyone can play with domination and submission, and often people will tend towards one or the other end of this power dynamic (‘switches’ do exist and are those that can play in either space).

Doms or Dommes (masculine and feminine terms for domination) are those who enjoy playing the dominant role in this dynamic and tend to be individuals who naturally gravitate towards leadership and positions of trust and power, have solid knowledge of communication and consent, handle responsibility with confidence and ease, and clearly understand the distinction between consensual power exchange and unwarranted abuse.

Doms/Dommes are highly intentional in their work and play with the space between anticipation, electricity, power, and sensuality. They do this through finding out what their submissive partner desires and then consensually creating and setting an agenda to meet these desires, crafting and developing a scene, using tools and techniques to play with their partners wants and needs, monitoring responses, and engaging with thoughtful and appropriate aftercare.

Often the main tools of this type of play aim to stimulate the senses in various ways. So anything from blindfolds, earplugs, specific clothing, restraints, rope, feathers, Wartenberg wheels, riding crops, paddles, canes, floggers, and a variety of other items can be used to create physical sensations and physiological responses. For the person in the submissive role this can be very stimulating and can create what is called submissive subspace, which is a feeling of complete surrender and openness, often accompanied by significant erotic charge. It is this subspace that Doms/Dommes often aim to create in this play.

Domination is a learnt craft and should only ever be carried out with the best intentions for those that are playing in this dynamic space. It is a position of considerable responsibility and care and must be undertaken with love at its heart.
